FAQs

Q: What is Senior Move Management?

A: Senior Move Management is a profession that assists older adults and their families with the emotional and physicals aspects of downsizing and relocation. Although specific services vary, Senior Move Managers can help with some or all of the following:
• Developing a plan and timeline for the move
• Organizing, sorting and downsizing
• Prepare a customized floor plan for the new home.
• Arrange for the disposal of unwanted items through donation to charity, consignment, or estate sale
• Interviewing, scheduling and overseeing movers
• Arranging shipments to family members or storage
• Professional packing of belongings
• Unpacking and setting up in the new home
• Related services, such as cleaning, trash removal, shopping for items for the home, assistance in selecting a realtor and helping prepare the home for sale.

Q: How is a Senior Move Manager different than a regular mover?

A: Senior Move Managers provide a multi-phase approach to the move process. They are trained to handle the entire project—from sorting through and packing or disposing of your belongings, interviewing and supervising the moving company, unpacking and resettling in your new home, and all the details in-between—they can do it all, or only the parts with which you need help. In addition to the physical details of the move, a Senior Move Manager is trained to consider the client’s emotions relating to the move, as well as their physical and/or cognitive impairments. When family members live out of town, the Senior Move Manager can provide peace of mind, acting as the contact person for the family.

Q: What are the real benefits of hiring a Senior Move Manager?

A: Senior Move Managers have expertise in resources and approaches that can save time and money as well as reduce stress and produce quality results. Services are personalized to meet the client’s needs and preferences. Using an outside “expert” can preserve delicate family relationships when emotions are fragile, and can free up family members to focus on more important matters.

Q: What type of training does a Senior Move Manager receive?

A: The National Association of Senior Move Managers (NASMM) provides training and support to its members. NASMM members are experienced professionals bound by a pledge of integrity, committed to safety and ethics, and dedicated to continuing development

Q: What if my family wants to help?

A: You and your family can do as much of the project as you wish and leave the rest for us. All services are available “a la carte.” In the initial consultation, you can indicate to the Senior Move Manager which services you require and the written estimate will be based on the services you request

Q: When do I need to start to prepare for my move?

A: It is important to start planning as soon as possible. We can work with you to prepare a timeline for your move. In some cases, we work with the client for a few months prior to the move to sort through the accumulation of belongings. When time does not allow, or if the move is relatively simple, we can prepare and execute in a very short time frame. It all depends on your needs.

Q: I’m not ready to move, but I would like to start clearing out my things to prepare to downsize. Can you help with that?

A: Yes, we can work alongside you to help you decide what keep and what to get rid of and help find a home for your unwanted items
